Submissions open for 2012 Online Journalism Awards

Online journalists, digital news organizations and students worldwide can apply for an award.

The Online News Association and the University of Miami School of Communication have launched the 2012 the Online Journalism Awards recognizing excellence in digital reporting.

This year's contest features 11 categories - public service, general excellence, technical innovation, breaking news, planned news/events, explanatory reporting, topical reporting, online commentary, feature, investigative journalism and non-English projects. Categories are divided by size, defined by the number of full-time employees dedicated to editorial efforts. Student projects that were part of coursework are also eligible.

Finalists will be selected in each category and eight awards come with a total of US$33,000 in prize money, courtesy of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the Gannett Foundation, including two $2,500 awards for innovative investigative work.

Awards will be given at the Online News Association Conference & Awards Banquet in San Francisco. The OJAs, launched in 2000, are the only comprehensive set of journalism prizes honoring excellence in digital journalism.

The entry fee is US$100 for ONA members, US$175 for non-members, US$50 for student members and US$125 for student non-members.

Apply by June 21.
