Call For Submissions: Good Practices In The Elimination Of Discrimination Against Women In Political And Public Life

The Working Group on Discrimination against Women in law and in practice notes that situations of political transition provide a unique opportunity to address women’s participation in the political system and women’s human rights in the legal and social systems, including the elimination of discrimination against women in law and in practice.

This thematic research will culminate in the report that the Working Group will present to the Human Rights Council in 2013.

In this regard, the Working Group would like to invite anyone to contribute to its research by submitting information on:
  • Constitutional and other legislative initiatives and reforms put in place to promote women’s rights and gender equality, including through the revision and repeal of discriminatory provisions in legislation;
  • Strengthening the framework of state institutions, machineries and mechanisms to implement actions in order to eliminate all forms of discrimination and violence against women;
  • Improving women’s political participation, on equal terms with men, in the transitional and post-transitional process at all levels of decision-making, including through the adoption of temporary special measures;
  • Increasing women’s access to justice, including transitional justice mechanisms.
The Working Group would like to encourage that the information on the above points and any additional information that may be submitted highlights in particular good practices, lessons learnt and promising experience in the elimination of discrimination against women in the field of political and public life both in general terms and/or with particular reference to times of political transition.

The Working Group sees the issue of women’s participation in political and public life as crucial as many obstacles still prevent women from participating in public and political life on an equal footing with men. Furthermore women are limited in their ability to pass on their nationality and citizenship to spouses and to children, in the way that men can. This discrimination strikes at the essence of women’s right to equal citizenship and human dignity and impacts on the freedom of movement of women.

The Working Group notes that various individuals and organisations may wish to develop documents and reports of consultations to submit for consideration. In accordance with the established practice of mandate-holders, the Working Group welcomes all relevant submissions that NGO’s and other independent experts may wish to transmit for its consideration in preparation of either the annual report on women’s participation in political and public in times of political transition or for the purpose of collecting good practices in this field in general terms.

This is being organized in collaboration with US Government’s Feed the Future initiative, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI). Expand understanding of WEAI dynamics through complementary qualitative and ethnographic work on domains or frameworks underlying the WEAI.
Support promising researchers interested in gender and agriculture through
Strengthening capacity for research, fieldwork and policy experience, and to build collaborations with their home academic institutions.

Numerous regional organizations also play a supporting role in the partnership.

As part of the fellowships, the CCMP will cover travel, lodging and daily subsistence expenses, arrange press accreditation at COP18, and provide other support services. The Fellows will benefit from a series of specially designed activities, including an orientation session, breakfast briefings, a field trip and a media clinic.

Criteria for evaluating applicants will include the prospective Fellow’s demonstrated interest in climate change issues; their audience; and the ability of the Fellowship to offer an opportunity for the journalists who might not otherwise have a chance to cover such events. Fellows represent a diverse range of experience and regions, though a primary goal of this program is to reach audiences – particularly marginalized communities – who are currently underserved when it when it comes to climate information.

The CCMP has funding to bring a small number of Fellows, but is actively working to increase support in order to increase those numbers. In addition to selecting the initial slate of Fellows, targeted to be announced in September a waitlist will also be created to select additional journalists if more funding becomes available.

Journalist Razzaq Gul's mruder condemned

LAHORE: South Asian Free Media Association (SAFMA) and South Asia Media Commission (SAMC) have strongly condemned the killing after abduction of a journalist Razzaq Gul in Pakistan’s Balochistan province and called for a full investigation into his abduction and murder.

Gul’s body had 15 bullet wounds and signs of torture.

“Journalists have been continuously targeted over the last few years. Authorities must act swiftly to end this cycle of violence and impunity,” SAFMA Secretary General Imtiaz Alam and SAMC President Kumar Ketkar said in a joint statement.

“SAFMA and SAMC support calls for an immediate inquiry into the death of the Express News reporter, and all other journalists abducted, tortured and killed in Balochistan. It has become virtually impossible to report independently,” the heads of the media rights bodies said.

“Balochistan is a dangerous place for journalists to work in. Gul is the 21st journalist to have lost his life in the line of duty in the restive province. But none of the cases has been seriously investigated and no one has been arrested or punished for these heinous crimes,” Mr Alam and Mr Ketkar said.

“Continued killing of journalists is aimed at pressuring media and journalists to keep them from reporting the facts,” they said.

Call for Applications invited at 5th CSBR Sexuality Institute 2012

Call for Applications are invited by 5th CSBR Sexuality Institute 2012. This Institute offers a holistic comprehensive curriculum on sexuality, sexual and reproductive health and rights with an in-depth discussion on the linkages between research and practice. Moreover, this interdisciplinary program combines history, theory, research and politics of sexuality with applications of advocacy and fieldwork.

The CSBR Sexuality Institute brings together important sexual and reproductive rights activists, academics and researchers. Held previously in Turkey (2009), Indonesia (2010) and Malaysia (2008-2011), with participants from 23 countries throughout Asia, Africa and the Middle East, the institutes include lectures, group work, round-tables, panels, site visits and film screenings, as well as a methodology to engage participants’ own experiences around sexuality.

Incorporated in the year 2001, the Coalition for Sexual and Bodily Rights in Muslim Societies (CSBR) is an international solidarity network of organizations, and academic institutions working to promote sexual and reproductive health and rights as human rights in Muslim Societies. CSBR includes institutional members from Algeria, Bangladesh,Lebanon, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Malaysia, Morocco, Pakistan, Palestine, the Philippines, the Sudan, Tunisia, Turkey, and Yemen.

The realization of sexual and reproductive health and rights is an integral part of gender equality, development and social justice. However, sexuality continues to be a contested site of political struggles both in Muslim societies and across the globe. Increasing global militarism, conservatism, and nationalism over the last decades provoked a serious backlash on sexual and reproductive health and rights, both at national and global levels. Given the current polarizations, it is more pertinent than ever to strengthen critical insight, further research, enhance knowledge and capacity on sexual and reproductive health and rights, and build an inclusive and affirmative discourse on sexuality.

The major objectives of the CSBR Sexuality Institute are as follows:
To further knowledge on the multi-dimensional and intersecting aspects of sexuality, health and rights;
To develop a deeper theoretical understanding of sexuality through a historical overview and analysis of current debates and research at the global level;
To provide a comprehensive and holistic understanding of sexuality in Muslim societies through a discussion of the history, legal frameworks, research, and current discourses;
To enhance participants’ sexual and reproductive health and rights advocacy skills on national and international levels;
To increase participants’ capacity as leading advocates, practitioners and researchers on sexuality issues at national, regional and international levels.

The Institute will be limited to 20-22 participants, as it is designed as intensive six-day participatory group training. Applications will be reviewed by the CSBR Training Committee.

Travel and accommodation costs for participants from the South will be covered by the Institute. All participants from the North are required to pay for full tuition and travel costs.

Deadline for applications: May 20, 2012

Media Release - World Press Freedom Day

World Press Freedom Day

South Asian Free Media Association (SAFMA) and South Asia Media Commission (SAMC) have in a joint statement urged the governments in South Asia to ensure that freedom of expression and media in their countries is guaranteed against any repressive provisions, measures or groups.

In the statement, issued ahead of the World Press Freedom Day, which falls on May 3 with its theme for the year being New Voices: Media Freedom Helping to Transform Societies, the regional media bodies called the commemoration an opportunity to celebrate the fundamental principles of media freedom; to evaluate media freedom, to defend the media from attacks on their independence and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

“Freedom of expression is a precious right that bolsters every other freedom and provides a foundation for human dignity. Free, pluralistic and independent media is essential for exercising this right,” said SAFMA Secretary General Imtiaz Alam and SAMC President Kumar Ketkar.

The governments in the region should commit themselves to supporting and expanding press freedom and the free flow of information in this digital age,” they said.

“New media have enabled people to bring about massive social and political transformations. Yet, media freedom is fragile, and it is also not yet within the reach of everyone. Furthermore, as more reporting is transmitted online, more and more online journalists including bloggers are being harnessed, attacked and even killed for their work.”

In South Asia185 journalists have been killed since 1992 for their work. Pakistan tops the tally with 58 followed by India 39, Afghanistan 28, Sri Lanka 25, Bangladesh 18, and Nepal 17.

Violence and censorship against journalists are a threat to democracy and limit their ability to work freely. Press freedom and freedom of speech must be protected and promoted," they said.
World Press Freedom Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in December 1993, following the recommendation of UNESCO's General Conference. Since then, 3 May, the anniversary of the Declaration of Windhoek is celebrated worldwide as World Press Freedom Day.

The fellowship funds work that will enrich public understanding of those challenges and stimulate far-reaching and probing conversations within the Open Society Foundations and in the world.

A fellowship project might identify a problem that has not previously been recognized, develop new policy ideas to address familiar problems, or offer a new advocacy strategy. Fellows should take advantage of the considerable intellectual and logistical resources of the Open Society Foundations and expect to contribute meaningfully to the Foundations’ thinking in return.

In evaluating each proposal, the selection committee weighs three factors: the applicant, the topic of the project, and the work product.

Eligibility-

The Open Society Fellowship chooses its fellows from a diverse pool of applicants that includes journalists, activists, academics, and practitioners in a variety of fields. Gates Foundation’s Grants under Water, Sanitation & Hygiene for Reinventing the Toilet Challenge

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has issued a request for letters of inquiry for disbursing a set of new grants to support its Reinventing the Toilet Challenge (Round 2) under its Water, Sanitation & Hygiene Program. These grants are intended for exceptionally highly-qualified research groups interested in contributing to major advances in sanitation and hygiene in the developing world.

The Reinvent the Toilet Challenge is designed to prototype a means of dealing effectively and cost-efficiently with human waste for the 2 billion people on earth who currently lack access to safe and affordable sanitation.

Successful applicants will participate in the next phase of the Reinvent the Toilet Challenge: designing, prototyping and testing entirely stand-alone, self-contained, practical sanitation modules which intake bodily wastes and swiftly dispose of them without any incoming water piping, outgoing sewer piping or electric or gas utility services. These modules must intake all outputs of the serviced population – ultimately at single-residence scales – with minimal module footprints and assured biosafety. Thus, chemical and mechanical engineering approaches are preferred.

At present, the Foundation is soliciting letters of inquiry and capability declarations from groups, primarily in the academic sector and from for-profit organizations, who are well qualified to undertake R&D and execute pertinent program plans. Full proposals for grant awards are not being solicited at the present, but submission of proposals may be invited in the near future from those whose letters of inquiry and capability declarations are of extraordinary quality.

A single-page typed-or-printed letter of inquiry and capability declaration should be submitted no later than May 10th 2012 in order to be assured of consideration.
