The May 18 Memorial Foundation’s is organizing the ‘The May 18 Academy 2013′ – a training program for domestic/international civil society activists working forhuman rights, democracy and peace. The training program will be held in Korea and expenses to participate in it will be covered by the Foundation.

The May 18 Academy provides special lectures based on the May spirit and a valuable opportunity to share experiences among activists in solidarity. The Academy is comprised of three parts, two for Korean participants (Academy 1 and 3) and one (Academy 2) for international participants. This call is for international participants for Academy 2.

The Academy 2 is for international civil society activists from around the world countries consists of programs to promote better understanding of Korean modern history and of commemoration events for democracy, human rights and peace movements. It is a three-week course with three categories of participants: Senior, Middle Manager and Junior. The program began in 2004 and as of 2012, 191 activists from 28 countries have participated in the program.

The aim of the May 18 Academy is to introduce participants to Korean history and a variety of democratic movements in Korea including the May 18 Democratization Movement in 1980, through both theoretical and practical experiences. Participants in the Academy engage with Korean modern history of human rights and democracy through a 3 week program of guided fieldtrips to places of significance in Korean modern history, visits with Korean organizations, as well as expert lectures and workshops. The first week is held in Seoul and the following two weeks are held in the May 18 Education Center, Gwangju.

The May 18 Academy 2 will select 20 participants.

Travel photography scholarship

Aspiring travel photographers can compete for a mentored trip to Greenland.

World Nomads is accepting applications for a travel photography scholarship. The winner will spend 10 days with his or her mentor, Nat Geo veteran and National Geographic Channel host Jason Edwardsphotographing the people, wildlife and landscapes of Greenland at various times of the day and night.

The winner will receive round-trip airfare from the country of residence to Copenhagen, then from Copenhagen to Nuuk, Greenland, up to US$1,000 worth of arctic weather gear, and travel insurance for the duration of the trip from World Nomads.

The applicants must be available to be in Greenland between Aug. 26 and Sept. 6, 2013.

To apply, submit a series of photos (maximum of five) about a place and a 1,200-character-or -less essay about yourself and why you should be chosen.

UN offers press fellowship on global issues

Reporters who cover global health issues can apply for a fellowship.

The United Nations Foundation offers a fellowship with a special focus on the role of the UN, global health and international development and will provide fellows with access to leading experts. Fellows will report on the events and announcements made during UN Week, September 22-25.

This fellowship is designed to foster participants’ understanding of the issues surrounding international development and global health. Special consideration will be given to journalists whose portfolios include global health or foreign affairs.

Applicants must be fluent in English. Fellows are required to participate for the entire duration of the four-day program.

Investigative journalism conference calls for papers

Journalism academics worldwide can submit their papers to be presented at the Global Investigative Journalism Conference.

The eighth Global Investigative Journalism Conference, to be held October 12-15 in Rio de Janeiro, will feature for the first time an academic research track, highlighting trends, challenges, teaching methodologies and best practices in investigative journalism.

Topics of research papers will be considered but not limited to trends in computer-assisted reporting and data journalism, trends in investigative reporting, challenges related to country or culture, successful teaching methods and adapting investigative journalism to new technologies.

If a topic is accepted, the paper’s length is limited to 15 pages (excluding references, tables and appendices). Papers must follow APA format, and can be written in English, Portuguese or Spanish.

The deadline is July 15.

Science journalism award


Journalists ages 30 or younger who cover scientific issues can apply for the Evert Clark/Seth Payne Award.

The award is intended to encourage young science writers by recognizing outstanding reporting and writing in any field of science.

The winner will receive US$1,000 and expenses to attend the annual meeting of the National Association of Science Writers and the New Horizons briefing of the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing in October.

Both freelancers and staff writers are eligible. Science writing includes, but is not limited to, writing in the biological, physical, environmental, computer and space sciences, along with technology, mathematics, health and science policy. Stories submitted in languages other than English must be accompanied by a translation.

UN contest for multimedia professionals

Designers, producers, application developers, journalists and writers interested in digital media and development can submit their projects.

The World Summit Youth Award (WSYA) seeks young multimedia professionals who use Internet and mobile technology to put the UN Millennium Development Goals into action and make a difference. Categories cover issues like poverty, education, gender equity, culture, environment and social justice.

Participants must be under 30 years old and citizens of UN Member states. The submitted product, project or application may be in any language. Registration information must be in English.

The winners will be invited to the WSYA Winners´ Event in Sri Lanka. Travel and accommodation costs will be covered by organizers.
