Applicants are invited to apply for Round 13 Australian Leadership Awards Fellowships programme which aims to develop leadership, address priority regional development issues, and build partnerships and links between Australian organisations and their partner organisations in developing countries in the Asia-Pacific region, Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa and the Middle East.
The ALA Fellowships program engages with a wide cross-section of the Australian community on aid delivery issues and priorities for development. Through ALA Fellowships, Australian organisations have the opportunity to build and strengthen links with organisations in developing countries by offering professional development opportunities in Australia.
The goal of the ALA Fellowships program is to develop appropriately trained current and aspiring leaders in priority areas, who, in the short to medium term, will be in a position to advance key regional policy objectives and increase institutional capacity of partner countries. ALA Fellowships are designed to complement individual bilateral country programs by offering flexible learning opportunities that address current and emerging needs at the country, sub-regional and regional levels.
Eligibility-
  • Applications are restricted to Australian organisations that can demonstrate ongoing linkages with overseas counterpart organisations in eligible countries.
  • Examples of eligible Australian organisations include NGOs, academic institutions, research organisations, business, industry, media, professional associations and Government agencies.
  • Australian organisations can apply for ALA Fellowship funding through a competitive grant process. Important selection criteria include-
  1. the likely impact of the program or activities
  2. the leadership potential and quality of nominated fellows to assume leadership roles and influence policy reform and development outcomes
  3. the level of support from the overseas counterpart organisations and the sustainability of linkages between the Australian organisation and the overseas counterpart organisations and fellows
  4. the capacity of the Australian organisation to support the program or activities.
  • Overseas counterpart organisations and individual fellows must be sponsored by an Australian organisation, and may not apply directly for an ALA Fellowship. They may, however, initiate contact with an Australian organisation to explore the latter’s interest in applying for Fellowship funding.
  • ALA Fellowships support a wide variety of areas and sectors. Australian organisations are encouraged to design programs that address priority areas, including disability and development, economic growth, educationenvironment, food security, gender, governancehealthhuman rights, infrastructure, mining for development, regional stability, rural development and water and sanitation.
How to apply?
  • For Round 13, AusAID is implementing an online application form for the ALA Fellowships program.
  • Visit the online application page [external website] to register and begin an application, or to complete an existing application.
  • An eligible application consists of the following-
  • A completed online application form submitted by the end of deadline. The form must include all mandatory attachments (listed below) and be checked and acknowledged by the appropriate Australian organisation office bearer with the authority to commit the organisation to the funding and proposed program.
  • Documents required to be attached to the online application form (NB applicant MUST use these AusAID templates, templates are also accessible from within the online application form)-

The International Centre for Women’s Leadership invites only women candidates to apply for Global Change Leaders program – a certificate course for emerging women leaders from the global south.
Through campus-based education, field visits, mentorships and linkages to a global network of other women leaders, the program enables the women to strengthen their leadership capacities to contribute to change in their organizations and communities. Program participants engage in learning themes grounded in real world experiences. Topics covered include transformative leadership concepts, practical leadership skills, citizen-led and asset-based development, and oral and written communications. Through a shared learning environment with other emerging women leaders from around the world, participants are exposed to a range of experiences and the beginnings of a potentially lifelong network of support.
Program Objective is to enable Global Change Leaders to take on more powerful and dynamic leadership roles in their organizations and communities. Specific outcomes for participants include-
  • Practical understanding of leadership concepts and application within their own context
  • Enriched knowledge and experience in essential leadership skills
  • Expertise in organizational learning and change management
  • Strengthened capacity to realize sustainable, citizen-led and asset-based development goals
  • Effective and compelling oral and written communications, and presentation skills
  • Ability to apply strategies and tools that underpin innovative social and economic initiatives
  • Active participation in a global network of like-minded women leaders
Eligibility-
  • Female
  • From the global south
  • A practitioner in civil society organizations including community based organizations and not for profits, or active in public or private institutions, donor/philanthropic agencies, social movements or in a social enterprise / business
  • At least two years of demonstrated leadership in a social or economic development endeavour in sectors such as livelihoods or inclusive economic development, food security, environment, access to education and health care, governance, and the rights of girls and women
  • University degree or combination of post-secondary education and experience
  • Competence in English

The United Nations mandated University for Peace (UPEACE) seeks applications for Peace Builders Fellowship for the academic year 2013-2014, to bring opportunities to young professionals who have an interest and commitment to peace, international cooperation, and conflict resolution. Given the global economic situation and the fact that peace cannot wait, UPEACE will meet students from specific regions half-way by providing 50% scholarship.
UPEACE, based in Costa Rica, offers students a powerful academic and multicultural experience as they undertake studies in an intensive programme with fellow students from more than 50 countries, building strong social and professional connections on the way.
  • The one-year MA programmes are specialized in areas related to peace studies and provide field experience that will enable students to work in an international job market. Courses are taught by international faculty, with recognized expertise in their area of study.

Transparency International (TI) is the global civil society organisation leading the fight against corruption. Through more than 90 chapters worldwide and an international secretariat in Berlin, Germany, TI raises awareness of the damaging effects of corruption and works with partners in government, business and civil society to develop and implement effective measures to tackle it.

Main function: The Regional Coordinator implements projects aimed at strengthening TI’s presence, reputation and impact in assigned countries (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka) where s/he is the primary TI-S contact. Working with the Regional Director and/or Regional Outreach Manager, s/he represents TI in sub regional and regional institutions, supports Chapters’ work/representation at national level, monitors political developments, identifies reputational risks, coordinates capacity development and advocacy interventions, and ensures implementation of the Accreditation Policy.

Responsibilities:
Monitor the political situation, anti-corruption developments, reputational risks and media opportunities in assigned countries (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka) to provide timely information to the Regional Director, Regional Outreach Manager, Regional Programme Manager, Programme Coordinators, Rapid Response Unit, SAFE Unit, and Communication Department - and to provide locally relevant anti-corruption insights to internal and external stakeholders.
Engage in Chapters’ national level advocacy work while being able to respond to direct enquiries from individuals.
Facilitate the provision of TI-S Key Support Services to assigned Chapters including capacity building and fundraising for new local projects.
Promote and support all aspects of capacity development, citizen engagement, knowledge exchange and governance in the assigned Chapters, including both the overseeing and management of regional projects ( where appropriate) and Chapter’s own initiatives in these areas.
Identify, assess and develop potential new TI Chapters and partners.
Take active part in media work and interviews at national and regional level, and represent TI in sub regional and regional institutions and fora.
Work closely with Programme Coordinators and Regional Programme Managers to build and sustain Chapters ownership of and participation in programmes/projects in which they engage.


Knowledge, experience and skills:
Postgraduate university degree or professional qualification in social science, public policy or administration, journalism, international law, economics, management, or another relevant field.
4/5+ years of relevant experience with an International NGO or International Organisation, or Multinational Organisation with a demonstrated in depth knowledge and experience in the region, working on issues of good governance, public sector reforms, social development, international development, or institutional capacity-building.
Strong networking and people skills, experience of building and maintaining networks in the South Asia region.
Previous experience in media relations would be an asset.
Dynamic self-starter, highly motivated, and comfortable in taking initiative.
Spoken and written fluency in English; fluency in one of the South-Asian languages would be an asset
In depth knowledge of the South Asia region, in particular the region’s political context.
Keen interest and knowledge of corruption and development issues.

CRS International Development Fellows Program 2013-2014

The Catholic Relief Services (CRS) is accepting applications for the 2013-2014 International Development Fellows Program (IDFP). The IDFP gives people who are interested in a career in international relief and development an opportunity to increase their overseas experience and gain exposure to our programs.
Each year, CRS places approximately 25 Fellows with our country programs overseas. Assignments are for one year, starting in late summer. Specific job responsibilities vary greatly from one country to another depending on the country program’s focus (Agriculture, Health, Peacebuilding, Education, Microfinance, or a combination of these).
The goal of the IDFP is to place Fellows in positions where they can draw on their previous education and work experience, while broadening their skills. Many of our fellowships lead to regular positions with Catholic Relief Services.
Eligibility Requirements
  • Graduate degree in a field relevant to international development.
  • Professional proficiency in French, Spanish, Arabic, or Portuguese. French preferred.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States
  • At least 6 months overseas work or volunteer experience in a developing country OR significant domestic community development experience in addition to time spent overseas.
  • Strong cross-cultural skills with the ability to adapt to the local culture.
  • Ability to operate effectively in a stressful, fast changing environment where security could change unexpectedly.
  • Fluency in English with strong oral and written communication skills and strong analytical skills.
  • Interest in a career in development or emergency relief with Catholic Relief Services

Scholarships for Master of Human Rights and Democratisation at the University of Sydney

The University of Sydney, Australia is accepting applications for study and for scholarships in the Master of Human Rights and Democratisation (Asia Pacific).
The MHRD is a unique Master degree program in which students undertake a foundational semester of study at the University of Sydney, and then a second semester at one of the four partner universities:
Graduates of the program will gain an interdisciplinary understanding of human rights and democratisation in the Asia Pacific, and will have opportunities to research and examine the application of human rights and democratisation in the field with the partner institutions.
Graduates will have both the ability to undertake independent scholarly research on current issues pertaining to human rights and democratisation in the Asia Pacific and skills to put their academic understanding and practical experience to use in real situations.
People  who have a strong commitment to, or experience of working on issues about human rights and democratisation can apply for this degree. It will strongly benefit people already working in, or seeking to work in the fields of human rights and democratisation in our region.
20 partial scholarships, covering course fees and a stipend will be offered to outstanding applicants from across the Asia Pacific region. This is made possible with the support of a significant grant from the European Union, through the European Inter-University Centre.
Scholarships will be available to citizens of Asia Pacific countries. The award of scholarships will be determined by academic qualifications and potential contribution to human rights and democratisation.

World Press Photo and Human Rights Watch: Tim Hetherington Grant

World Press Photo and Human Rights Watch have issued a call for applications for the Second Tim Hetherington Grant. Under this grant, press photographers and photojournalists around the world can apply for support to complete an existing project on a human rights theme.
The annual grant, worth € 20,000, will be awarded to a photographer to complete an existing project on a human rights theme. The judges will look for the qualities that defined Tim’s career when reviewing the applications: work that operates on multiple platforms and in a variety of formats; that crosses boundaries between breaking news and longer-term investigation; and that demonstrates a consistent moral commitment to the lives and stories of the photographic subject
The application process is open to all professional photographers who have participated in a World Press Photo competition between 2008 and 2012. The deadline for applications is 15 November.

Equitas’ International Human Rights Training in Montreal, Canada

Equitas is organizing the 34th annual International Human Rights Training (IHRTP) from June 9 to June 28, 2013 in Montreal, Canada. With support from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), Equitas has funding to award a limited number of bursaries to selected International Candidates.
This international training is an intermediate-level program which brings together approximately 90 participants from about 50 countries to help them deepen their understanding of human rights and of essential role of human rights education in effecting social change.
The goal of the program is to strengthen the capacity of human rights organizations to undertake human rights education efforts (e.g., training, awareness campaigns, information dissemination, and advocacy) aimed at building a global culture of human rights.
The 2013 edition will have a particular focus on the rights of childrenyouth and women. The exploration of human rights principles and instruments, ongoing critical reflection and inquiry, as well as extensive sharing of experiences allows participants to strengthen their capacity to engage in effective human rights education, and advance equality and human dignity thus leading to social change.
A bursary for this program from the organizers includes full tuition fees (including room and board) for the 3-week training program as well as travel expenses. Once eligibility has been determined, the Selection Committee will award the bursaries to the International Candidates who best meet the requirements.

ALFP offers an opportunity for public intellectuals from Asia who have deep roots in civil society and who play a leading role in initiating solidarity among concerned people reside at the I-House for about two months and intensively discuss regional and global concerns through dialogue, seminars, field research, and socializing. By offering the opportunity of living together, ALFP seeks to create a close, personal and professional network of public intellectuals in Asia.

Community Solutions Program now Accepting Application for 2013-2014 from Grassroot Change Makers, Community Development Workers, for a career development opportunity to increase their  professional skills, experience and networks.
The IREX Community Solutions Program brings the best as well as the brightest global community leaders working in Transparency & Accountability, Tolerance & Conflict Resolution, Environmental Issues and Women & Gender Issues from around the world to the US for an intensive professional development program.
IREX is an international nonprofit organization providing thought leadership and innovative programs to promote positive change globally. IREX enable local individuals and institutions to build key elements of a vibrant society including quality education, independent media and strong communities. To strengthen these sectors, our program activities also include conflict resolution, technology for development, gender and youth.
Incorporated in 1968, IREX has an annual portfolio of over $70 million and a staff of over 400 professionals worldwide. IREX employs field-tested methods and innovative uses of technologies to develop practical and locally-driven solutions with our partners in more than 100 countries.
Leaders bring years of experience to community development in the US while strengthening their capacity for leadership and development in their home countries. Through tailored fellowships, leaders gain hands-on experience in community work; collaborate and learn best practices through IREX’s online Community Leadership Institute; and create action plans for community-based initiatives back home. All individuals who meet the technical eligibility requirements are encouraged to apply by the application deadline.
ELIGIBILITY
  • Candidates will be considered without respect to race, color, religion, national origin, or gender. Persons with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply. Competition for the Community Solutions Program is merit-based and open to community leaders, ages 25-38 at the time of application, who meet the following criteria:
  • From a participating country (U.S. citizens, permanent residents of the U.S., and individuals who have applied for U.S. permanent residency in the past three years are not eligible for this program)
  • Currently living and working in his/her home country (Individuals participating in academic, training or research programs in the United States at the time of application and individuals residing or working outside their home countries at the time of application are not eligible for this program)
  • Currently working on a community project or initiative in his/her home country; and, has at least 2 years of professional experience in this capacity at the time of application
  • Able to begin the program in the United States in 2013, and is committed to returning to his/her home country after completion of the program
  • Able to receive a U.S. J-1 visa (Individuals who have participated in an exchange visitor program sponsored or funded by the U.S. Government who have not fulfilled their two-year home residency requirement by the time of application are not eligible for this program)
  • Proficient in spoken and written English at the time of application
