African Media Initiative launches news innovation challenge

A news innovation challenge seeks proposals for projects to strengthen and transform African news media.

The African Media Initiative launched the African News Innovation Challenge (ANIC), a new program that will provide US$12,500-US$100,000 grants to projects that aim to improve data-based investigative journalism, audience engagement, mobile news distribution, data visualization, new revenue models and workflow systems.

Announced in late 2011, ANIC is Africa’s first major contest designed to promote the development of digital media products and innovations.

Proposals may be submitted by news pioneers from anywhere in the world, but entries must have an African media partner to help develop and test the innovation.

Applications will be accepted in English, French, Portuguese or Arabic. Submit proposals by July 10.
