Women’s Participation in Politics

South Asian Women in Media (SAWM) Sri Lanka Chapter is hosting a seminar/panel discussion on Women’s Participation in Politics to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the International Women’s Day, which falls on March 8.

The event, which seeks to broaden public discussion on the important subject of increasing women's representation in politics and decision making, will be held at the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute, Horton Place, Colombo 7, from 3.00 pm to 6.00 pm on March 2 (Tuesday) 2010.

Discussions will take place in Sinhala and Tamil, with simultaneous translation.

With Parliamentary Election coming up in a few weeks, SAWM believes the issue of women’s participation in politics is both timely and relevant, especially in view of the very low percentage of women in political institutions in Sri Lanka and their resultant inability to influence decision making.

Participants will include a number of women from various parts of the country who have contested in local elections and who are active in politics. They will examine the challenges faced by women, whatever party they may belong to, in entering politic.
