Global Communication, Local Perspectives Call for Papers

Call for Papers
China Association of Communication (中国传播学会CAC）and Chinese Communication Association (国际中华传播学会CCA）are co-organizing a conference on “Global Communication, Local Perspectives” to be held on December 10-12, 2010, at City University of Hong Kong.  This is the first time CAC has its annual conference outside mainland China, and it is a continuous effort of CCA to reach out and strengthen collaborative ties with peer academic organizations.  The Department of Media and Communication at City University of Hong Kong will serve as the host and conference planner.
Papers related to the following sub-themes/sessions and other topics are welcome:
1）Political economy of global communication
2）Mass media and social transformation
3）Media policy and regulation
4）Chinese culture and communication history
5）New media and social development
6）Journalism practice in the age of media convergence
7）Advertising and public relations in the context of globalization
8）Development of journalism and communication education
9）Round table on communication research
Submission Deadline:
Please submit abstracts of 250 words in e-files with contact information and name(s) and affiliation of the author(s) to the planner (City University) on July 1, 2010.  The abstracts will be reviewed, and notification of the results will be sent on August 1, 2010.  Full papers should be submitted on October 1, 2010, by the participants whose abstracts have been accepted. As the working languages of the conference are Chinese and English, papers written in other languages will not be accepted.

International freelancer awards calls for entries

Reporters and freelancers from the developing world and countries in transition can submit works to the 2010 Kurt Schork Memorial Awards, which reward high-quality writing and investigative efforts, as well as reporters' courage and resourcefulness. Deadline: July 13.

Both categories (local reporters covering local issues and international freelancer covering international issues) come with a $5,000 cash prize. All print media and established online publications are accepted. Blogs and personal websites are not eligible.

Journalists needed for 2010 Global Integrity report

U.S.-based watchdog organization Global Integrity is seeking experts to assist in the publication of their 2010 Global Integrity Report, on corruption around the world. Deadline: June 1.

The report will examine corruption in numerous countries based on on-the-ground reporting, quantitative data, government accountability and anti-corruption mechanisms. Writers will be compensated.

Journalists, researchers and social scientists are encouraged to apply.

Reuters offers multimedia training course in London

The Reuters Foundation is inviting journalists from the developing world to apply for a course on multimedia reporting, to be held in London September 6 to 10. Deadline: July 15.

The "Multimedia Web tools for journalists" course, to be held in London, will teach newsgathering teams practical ways to take advantage of multimedia tools and methods for finding, developing and presenting stories.

Journalists from the developing world with a minimum of two years experience with a general news or specialist reporting background are eligible to apply for the course. No prior technical skills or Internet training is required.

Full bursaries or part-funded bursaries may be available.

Contest seeks short films on development topics

Link TV, a television channel providing global perspectives on news, events and culture, is calling for entries of five-minute films that tell stories of progress in developing countries. These films will be entered in Link TV's ViewChange Online Film Contest. Deadline: August 31.

Submitted films may cover efforts to help end poverty, disease, hunger, conflict, inequality and illiteracy in developing countries. Films may be submitted by professional or amateur filmmakers and may be filmed in any format -- documentary, short drama, music video, animation or other formats.


A panel of judges will select the winner, who will receive US$20,000.

Female writers invited to submit essays on 'holding hands'

Women around the world are invited to submit non-fiction essays on the topic of "holding hands," for publication in the upcoming issue of World Pulse, a magazine that tells of global issues through the eys of women. Works will also be published online, and the top three stories will receive US$100. Deadline: June 4.

World Pulse invites writers to tell a story about "holding hands," which might explore themes of mentorship, connection, taboo, solidarity, violence, relationships, sensuality, family, love, friendship, healing, bridging difference, or anything in between. Full guidelines are available on the Web site.

World Pulse is seeking unique, honest, personal, and creative entries that showcase the true-life stories of women and their allies in their own words. Stories should be 400 words, maximum.

Asia Pacific and U.S. journalists can apply for a study tour fellowship

Journalists from Asia Pacific and the United States are invited to apply for a fellowship on energy security that will involve a study tour in Hawaii and cities in Asia or the U.S. Deadline: June 16.

The 2010 Jefferson Fellowships, to take place October 23 to November 13, will look specifically at two of the largest users of energy, the U.S. and China, and their efforts in addressing energy security.

Applicants must be working print, broadcast and online journalists in the United States, the Pacific Islands or Asia with a minimum of five years of professional experience. Applicants must have the ability to communicate in English in a professional, multi-cultural environment.

Roundtrip airfare, lodging, ground transportation and meals are covered for participating journalists.

Malaysia workshop to explore the new media market

The South Asian Journalists Association (SAJA) is offering stipends to help students working in unpaid or partially paid internships this summer. Deadline: May 31.

Applicants must be of South Asian descent or demonstrate an interest in South Asia or the diaspora. They must be current students who are juniors, or graduating seniors in an accredited college or university in North America; or a student enrolled or about to enter a graduate-level program in North America. Applicants must have an internship offer from a recognized media organization.

The Internship Assistance Program is intended to recognize the reporting abilities and commitment of emerging journalists from across the United States, Canada and South Asia.

The SAJA Internship Assistance Fund will offer stipends of various amounts to cover airfares or other expenses.

Youth award seeks creative digital works

Young designers, e-content creators, writers and bloggers (up to 30 years old) from around the world are invited to submit digital content to the World Summit Youth Award (WSYA) competition. Deadline to apply: June 20.

The WSYA will select and promote the best works that demonstrate young people’s potential to create outstanding, creative digital content. Nominations include: Fight Poverty, Hunger and Disease; Education for All; Power 2 Women; Create Your Culture; Go Green; and Pursue Truth!

WSYA serves as a platform for people from all UN member states to work together in efforts to reduce poverty and hunger, and to tackle ill-health, gender inequality, lack of education, lack of access to clean water and environmental degradation.

An international jury of 12 experts will evaluate the projects in two rounds of online judging, and three winners in each category will be selected.
