Now Open - 2011 Call for Entires

The Kurt Schork Memorial Fund is now calling for submissions for the 2011 Kurt Schork Awards in International Journalism.

There are two categories:

• Local Reporter covering events within their home country or region;
• Freelance Journalist covering international news.

The stories can be about conflict, human rights, cross-border issues or any other controversial matter in a particular country or region. Each submission must demonstrate professionalism, meet international journalistic standards and provide evidence that courage and determination were required in covering the story.

The submission deadline is 1 June 2011.

Scholarship for women media entrepreneurs

The scholarship program, called 10,000 Women, is sponsored by the International Women’s Media Foundation. Selected women entrepreneurs will receive full scholarships to participate in a thirteen-week training program in Bengaluru in partner with the Indian School of Business.

The program is part of a five-year investment by Goldman Sachs to provide 10,000 underserved women around the world with a business and management education. It is open to women entrepreneurs with financial need who own businesses that use digital media.

Competition open to self-published photographers

Photographers who have self-published books of their work can enter a competition.

The Photography Book Now competition, sponsored by Blurb, celebrates the best in self-published photography books and the photographers behind them.

There are four categories: fine art, documentary, travel and student work.

The lead judge is Darius Himes, assistant director of Fraenkel Gallery and co-founder of Radius Books. Other judges include Whitney Lawson, photo editor for Travel + Leisure and photographer Gerry Badger.

The winner of each category will receive US$5,000 and the grand prizewinner will receive US$25,000. There are also cash prizes for the first- and second-runners up in each category. Entries must be in English.

A competition honors investigative journalism in a developing country reported under difficult conditions.

The Global Shining Light Award, sponsored by the Global Investigative Journalism Network, awards a journalist, journalism team or media outlet that reported under threat, duress or difficult conditions. The winner will be awarded at the Global Investigative Journalism Conference in Kyiv, Ukraine.

The report must have originated in and affected a developing or emerging country. It must also have been published or broadcast between January 1, 2010 and April 1, 2011. Organizations, media outlets or journalists can submit nominations.

Grant for Photojournalists working for social change

The Open Society Documentary Photography Project, sponsored by the Open Society Foundations, offers grants to encourage new ways of presenting documentary photography to the public.

Photographers will take an existing body of work on a social justice or human rights issue and devise an innovative way of using that work to create social change.

Projects should include a partnership between a photographer and an organization that combines expertise in documentary photography with experience working on the topic. Five to eight grants of US$5,000 to US$30,000 will be awarded.

The Peter Martin fellowship, sponsored by The Financial Times (FT), gives a journalist the opportunity to intern at the newspaper in London for three months. The candidate will work under the supervision of Martin Wolf, chief economics commentator and Jonathan Ford, chief leader writer.

The successful candidate will have a good foundation in economics, a capacity for original thinking and the ability to write fluently and accessibly for an English readership. Candidates should also have a strong interest in business and the economic impact of technological change.

The fellow will receive £5,000 (about US$8,150) to cover travel and accommodation.

War correspondents invited to apply for Bayeux-Calvados Awards

War correspondents and photographers from all over the world are invited to apply for the Bayeux-Calvados Awards for War Correspondents, which honour journalists who risk their lives in the world's hot spots to cover the news. The deadline for applications is 6 June 2011.

The prize carries five cash awards of 7,000 Euros (US$10,100) each in the categories of television, radio, print, photography, and new this year: web journalism.

Four special awards, worth 3,000 to 3,800 Euros (US$4,300-$5,500) each, are also up for grabs, including a Young Reporter Prize for journalists 28 and under.

The entry should report on a conflict and its consequences for the civil population, or an event concerning the defence of press freedom and democracy.

Winners will be announced at a ceremony in Bayeux, France, in October.

Apply now for the John Humphrey Freedom Award

The Canadian organisation Rights & Democracy invites nominations for the 2011 John Humphrey Freedom Award, which honours an organisation or person who has made an outstanding contribution to promoting human rights and democratic development. The deadline for nominations is 30 April 2011.

The winner will receive a CA$30,000 (US$31,300) grant, and a tour of Canadian cities to help increase awareness of his/her human rights work.

John Humphrey was a Canadian human rights law professor who prepared the first draft of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This year marks the 20th presentation of the award.

Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellows Program

Journalists and other civil society professionals from developing and aspiring democracies are invited to apply for a full-time, residential fellowship.

Also open to democratic practitioners and scholars, it is organized by the National Endowment for Democracy at the International Forum for Democratic Studies in Washington, D.C. The Forum hosts 16 to 20 Reagan-Fascell Fellows every year.

Applications for fellowships in 2012–2013 can be submitted from August 1 until November 1, 2011.
