The Kurt Schork Memorial Fund is now calling for submissions for the 2011 Kurt Schork Awards in International Journalism.
There are two categories:
Local Reporter covering events within their home country or region
Freelance Journalist covering international news.
The stories can be about conflict, human rights, cross-border issues or any other controversial matter in a particular country or region. Each submission must demonstrate professionalism, meet international journalistic standards and provide evidence that courage and determination were required in covering the story.
Judging
An international panel of judges will choose the winner in each category and will award a cash prize of US $5,000 to each, to be presented at a ceremony in London on 17 November. Winners' travel and accommodation will be arranged and paid for by KSMF and its partners. Winners will be contacted and publicly announced in September 2011.
Submissions
Each entrant can submit up to three articles published between 01 June 2010 and 31 May 2011 in any type of print-based media, including newspapers and magazines, or in established online publications. Blogs and personal websites are not eligible.
The submission deadline is 1 June 2011.
Entrants also need to supply supporting documentation, such as a CV/Resume about their education and journalistic experience, a passport-type photo, an English translation if their entry has been published in another language, and a statement about what the entrant had to deal with in covering the story. All requirements are specified on the official submission form; please ensure you complete all mandatory fields and provide everything requested.
Incomplete submissions will be disqualified.

We provide a live submission form which you can use to handle your application entirely online. Make sure you have your supporting documents ready on your computer so that you can attach them when prompted by the form.
Alternatively you can download a PDF version of the submission form. This can be completed on your computer and then emailed to us, with required supporting documentation attached. Or you can print it out and post it to us with all your entry material.

Further eligibility definitions
Local Reporter: Print journalists employed by a local news outlet and residing in a developing country or nation in transition (non OECD or EU countries), whose work has been published in a local publication are eligible. Although individual journalists are the primary focus, submissions from a team of journalists will also be considered.
Freelance Journalist: All freelance print journalists and those contracted by news organizations are eligible. A freelance journalist is an individual who is not employed by a news organization. They are self-employed, providing services, either on the basis of time or on the production of editorial materials as defined by individual contractual arrangements, and earn the majority of their income from journalism.
Eligible media: Entries are welcomed from all types of print-based media including newspapers and magazines and established on-line publications. Blogs and personal websites are not eligible.
Period covered: You can enter up to 3 articles published between 1 June 2010 and 31 May 2011.

UNICEF awards for International Children's Day broadcasts

NEW YORK, 25 March 2011 - UNICEF today called for entries from broadcasters for the 2011 International Children’s Day of Broadcasting Awards. The ICDB Awards will go to the radio and television broadcasters whose programming best reflects the 2011 International Children’s Day of Broadcasting theme, Girls Are… Boys Are…, and who demonstrate an overall dedication to youth participation in media.
To be eligible for the ICDB Award, broadcasts must have taken place on or around Sunday, 6 March 2011 in conjunction with the 2011 International Children’s Day of Broadcasting. The deadline for entries is 1 July 2011. More information and entry forms can be found at www.unicef.org/icdb.
To encourage youth participation in media throughout the year, judges not only consider the quality of the work, but also the commitment broadcasters make to engaging with youth on an ongoing basis.
"It is very important to create opportunities for young people to express themselves,” said Stephen Cassidy, chief of UNICEF’s Internet, Broadcast and Image Section. “We want to honor broadcasters around the world that have made these opportunities possible.”
The ICDB Award regional judging will take place in UNICEF’s 8 regions. Entries are due to UNICEF’s regional offices by 1 July 2011. The top-scoring entries in each region will compete for the global ICDB Award, to be announced in the fall.

The 2010 ICDB Awards went to Télévision Togolaise (Togo) for their program “A nous la planete,” Maputaland Community Radio Station (South Africa) for their program “All Rights All Children” and Voice of Nigeria for their program “Kidddies Voices.”
The ICDB Regional Prizes for television went to ATN Bangla (Bangladesh), Ethiopian Radio and Television Services, TV3 (Malaysia), C7 Sistema Jalisciense de Radio y TV (Mexico), SOREAD/2M (Morocco), Télévision Togolaise and UzNTT (Uzbekistan).
The ICDB Regional Prizes for radio went to Radijojo gGmbH (Germany), All India Radio, Tejarat Radio (Iran), TRAXXfm, Radio Televisyen Malaysia, Radio y Televisión de Aguascalientes (Mexico), Voice of Nigeria and Maputaland Community Radio Station.

Workshop on Covering Water & Sanitation issues
South Asian Women in Media (SAWM) Sri Lanka Chapter, in association with Sri Lanka Water Partnership and NetWater is organising a one day Workshop and Training Programme on how best to report on water and sanitation issues. The Workshop/Training Programme is scheduled to be held at CENWOR on Monday, March 28, 2011, and will cover such issues as the status of sanitation cover in Sri Lanka, how to communicate the sanitation story, school sanitation and internally displaced & their sanitation status.
The Workshop/Training programme will be conducted in Sinhala and Tamil. Translations will be provided where necessary.

Call for papers on digital media

The Arab-US Association of Communication Educators (AUSACE), is calling for papers on new media for its upcoming October conference in Lebanon.
The conference, hosted by the Media Studies Program at the American University of Beirut on October 28-31, 2011, has as its theme Digital & Media Literacy: New Directions. AUSACE is the largest association of communication and media studies educators bringing together Arab, US and International scholars.
Mobile phones, blogs, online social networks, wikis, user-generated news, and a plethora of ubiquitous digital media have facilitated access to information; allowed people from around the globe to connect; offered enormous potential for communication about, from, and among civil society groups, democracy advocates, and political activists; and presented new possibilities for national development projects—and lately for cataclysmic public uprisings and revolutions in the Arab world.
Researchers, scholars, experts and advanced graduate students interested in presenting at AUSACE 2011 are required to first submit an abstract of their research, panel, or poster by April 15.

The James H. Ottaway Sr. fellowships aim to improve the independent editorial content and financial strength of daily newspapers in new democracies.
Fellows receive seminar tuition, accommodation, meals and airfare from the country of origin to Washington, D.C. to attend seminars. This year's API seminar line-up includes hot-button journalism topics such as "Mobile Media: Opportunities on the Move," from July 18-19 and "The Next Generation of Media Managers," held Nov. 14-15.
Applicants must have at least five years experience as a high-ranking publisher, editor or general manager. Fluency in English is also required.

UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize 2011
UNESCO invites Member States, regional and international organizations, professional and non-governmental organizations working in the field of journalism and freedom of expression to nominate candidates for the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize 2011.
The purpose of the Prize, supported by the Guillermo Cano Foundation, the Nicholas B. Ottaway Foundation and JP/Politiken Newspapers LTD, is to honour a person, organization or institution that has made a notable contribution to the defence and/or promotion of press freedom anywhere in the world, especially if this involved risk.
The prize is intended to reward journalists who have shown dedication in the name of freedom of expression and information and to afford them the international recognition they deserve. Awarded annually, the Prize is marked by a ceremony and the winner is presented with the sum of US$25,000.
The 2011 Prize will be awarded during the World Press Freedom Day conference, which will take place in May.
